I believe that stories written in religious and epic books are not only historical events but signs for all people who sought guidance from them...like...when disciples of jesus left him is a sign to all those people who are on path of truth, that at one point they will be all alone and even loved ones may leave them.
Similarly, Lord Ram and sita (story from hindu book - ramayan)were banished from kingdom for 14 years and were given 'van-vaas' (to go and live in forest). During their stay, they went through hardships, met interesting people and they fought wars of truth with evil - which eventually was a part of their spiritual growth.
I think, we all at one point are forced by events in life to leave our usual comforts of life to go on path of 'van-vaas' (you really don't need to go in forest, it just a depart from your usual life and may carry 1000s form). It is nature's way of our spiritual schooling.
Some people just don't get aware that they are in 'van-vaas' !!!

Van = Forest
Vaas = reside
Van-vaas means to go and reside in forest.
