Born for a specific profession

There is a saying in Persian that: "Every human is created for a specific work."

I tried to quit medical school three times but failed. Eventually found my best solace in the same profession.

It may be right that we are destined for a specific profession.

On Zarf

بندے کی یاداشت بہت اچھی ہونی چاہٸیے- یاداشت ظرف کےساتھ چلتی ہے جس کا ظرف اچھا نہیں اس کی یاداشت اچھی نہیں ۔

Dark side of 'good'

Once I was shocked and taken aback when someone said: "There is always an evil side to good." I think it's kind of true. There is no black and white in life. It is all grey.

La-ilaha aur illallah saath saath chalte hain.

Why Men Marries

Received this as a forward: I agree partially but a strong argument

""Men attend to Women for two reasons, SEX, and LOVE, but in most cases, men do not Marry for Sex or for Love; they marry for STABILITY.

A man can Love you and not Marry you.

A man can have sex with you for years without marrying you. But immediately, he finds someone who brings stability to his life and marries her.

Men are visionaries when they think about marriage; they do not think about wedding dresses, bridesmaids, or anything the woman thinks is fanciful. They think that this woman can build me a home.

Women are tender; they have the capacity to receive and reproduce. You give her groceries, she prepares a meal, you give her money, she gives you peace, you give her sperm, and she gives you children.

You give it discomfort, it becomes your worst nightmare, and most men know it. This is why a man can stay with a woman for years, meet another in a month, and then get married.

It's the stability they want. Sex is a pleasure, love is an affection - stability is respect."

Gym and positive vibes

A few years ago, after I developed cervical rediculopathy, my physical therapist insisted I be regular at the gym. Over time, though I bunked here and there - I tried to behave. I try to be at the gym on my off days, even for 10 minutes. Every day I recall a statement made by my personal trainer 7 years ago.

"Gym doesn't only make you healthy, but it also makes you a good human being. When you are at the gym, you only think with positive vibes. You develop a passion for waiting when someone else is using your favorite machine. You learn to make room for other users. And when hundreds of humans of all ages, with different body shapes and sizes around you,  are trying hard to stay healthy, you develop a sense of linkage with humanity."

Sleep and insomnia

Being a physician, I learned that the two most pivot factors that play a role in human well-being are genes and the habit of good sleep. Fortunately, I usually sleep well for 8-10 hours. I advise friends and family to learn about sleep hygiene, like no caffeine after late afternoon, dark room, shut off phones at least 30 minutes before sleep, etc. Even if it requires pharmacological support, judiciously go for it.

Said that the following is an interesting conversation with a friend:

"Kehte hain agar raat ke kisi paher, gehri neend main aik jhatke see aankh khul jaye to - is dharti ke kisi kone pe kisi insaan ke saath bara zulm huwa hai."

"No wonder! So many humans suffer from insomnia all their life!"

Once upon a time in Romania

Dostoevsky ne kaha tha: "Sardian un ke liye sard hai, jin ke paas garam yaadain nahi."

I am fortunate to have a lot to be in memories to be nostalgic about all the time. The following text made me very nostalgic about almost 10-12 years ago, in Romania - lost in the woods.

"These pics are so so nostalgic for me. Whenever I look at these, it feels as if I am standing next to you on the road, waiting for the bus. First, right then left side of the road, cool air breezing through. Your nose is turning pink. Then I noticed your shirt cuffs which were out of your jacket sleeves, and u hadn't tied the buttons of the shirt in a sequence (Remember?) Then I undo and do buttons of yr shirt's cuffs and folded extra length of cuffs inside muttering?" Saalon aisay bund keay hain apnay baiton ke shirts ko and now yours" . That sheepish look on yr face is one of my cherished memory. Then u decided we should walk and find the bus (which we had already missed but were not aware of that then)

Money and Life - 2 lessons

When I came to this country, I was approached by a financial advisor in my third year of residency. I shunned him. I had no interest in it. Hailing from a lower middle class in Pakistan, my strategy was to stabilize and save. Over the years, I learned that in this country, money works differently. I was very late in the game.

As now my kids are in high school, I not only advise them to save from their first paycheck (a prudent person should save 20 percent of his net income); I urge them to invest from their first paycheck in whatever way they can, like 401(k), IRA, retirement, bonds, stock, etc. Also, when signing a job contract, look for long-term investment benefits and plans, etc.

Said that I learned two big lessons:

1. Is more really more? - means don't get greedy. Financial planning should balance leisure, life, ethics, values, and relationships.

2. It's not the timing of the market; it's the time in the market. - Means you should plan long-term gain in the market, not years but decades.

Happy New Year :)
