Growing up one of my uncle, used to narrate this myth often
- and interestingly he died in his "an" age too.

In certain parts of India, there is a myth that for Men, eight years of "an" are the hardest on him like ikkawan(51), bawan(52), treppan(53), chawwan(54), pachpan(55), chappan(56), sattawan(57) and atthawan(58) - and many can't survive those eight years.
Being a physician, I spoke to many elderly people, and most confess that indeed these were the most stressful time for them. I believe this is due to the fact that men tends to be very egoist.

It is very hard on men as he travels towards oldhood, and psychologically can't accept himself getting weak and frail, and this is probably one of the reason of his hard hit mid life crisis, popularly known as andropause.
I guess at some extent it is true for women also with her menopause, but I guess women are more accepting and tend to find solace in people around her.

Absolutely write. It is and I have worked on that hadeeth reported both in Muslim as well as in Bokhari

OK, Only part of hadeeth which is related, "(The matter of creation of) a human being is put together in the mother's womb in 40 days and then he becomes a clot of blood (Alaqa) for a similar period. . . . . . then Allah sends an angel who is ordered to write down 4 things: his deeds; his livelihood; his DATE/TIME OF DEATH; and wether he will be blessed or wretched (in religion. Then the soul is breather into him. . . . . . . . . "
'Soul breathing' is considered as the beginning of human LIFE The time of "ensoulment" may or may not be exactly coincident with "quichening" feeling of the mother. That has been my discussion on this hadeeth which is Saheeh and reported both in Bokhari and Muslim and I discussed with my cardiologist (Dr. Mubarak from Egypt) on some nuances of the Arabic words. My result of 'research' ends with this comment. "This hadeeth needs to be looked at by Hadeeth specialists for more clear interpretation"
