Mystic ... This actually is very true , Ashfaq uncle k baba ji is directly translating an aya ... because Jealously is one of the diseases of heart mentioned in Quran , it says ..Or do they envy [other] people because of what Allah has given them of His bounty? (Qur'an, chapter 4, verse 54)
Jews ko bhi yehi hasad lay baitha .. ye last prophet Arabon mein say kiu hai?
Jealousy ,Takkabbar or arrogance made Iblis go crazy when Allah made Adam and ask him to do sajda to Adam ... so definitely in other words its Rab ki taqseem say Ikhtilaf karna :) Just my understanding ~
I am wondering if "disagreeing with God's distribution" is more about envy than jealousy. (in regards to the distinction written here: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/joy-and-pain/201401/what-is-the-difference-between-envy-and-jealousy )
I think being envious is worse than being jealous (even have heard people arguing that being little jealous is normal in love relationship) :-/
The word used in aya is translated as envy but actual word used is Yahsadoona in that aya ... thats why I mentioned jealousy otherwise Jealousy/ envy in English has a different connotation based on situations .
Anony: I asked this question after above comments to an English literature major. He said envy is a positive attitude and jealousy is a negative connotation of it. (Don't know)
Agree with Mystic's English Lit major person ... that's how its written and perceived in most writings but Amriki use jealousy interchangeably in daily conversations .. Like someone will say , Oh you are going on vacation to ------ I am so jealous ! I used to get so annoyed by their Jealousy comment (due to its negative connotation ) but they rarely use envy that has positive vibe to it in normal conversations . Go figure ! :)
Hey thanks for the clarification @Books and Stilettos and @Mystic and sorry for the late reply! :-)
Do Hindi/Urdu words for jealousy/envy have similar subtlety in their meaning? I guess "Jalan" means more like jealousy. Not sure about "EErshya/Hasad karna" though --- does it have more positive spin??
