Literary touch in science

A few days back I had an interesting conversation with my teenage son on a need of literature read for science students.

When I was a medical student in Pakistan, I was fortunate enough to listen to few lectures (and attend few clinical rounds) of probably the wisest clinician ever born in Pakistan - Dr. Syed Mohibur Rab, popularly known as Professor S.M. Rab or to his students as Rab Sahab. He was one remarkable mind and a widely read person (RIP). His lectures were just pleasures to listen as he frequently quoted poetry to explain scientific concepts.

Once he was talking about the need of fundoscopy in infective endocarditis and brilliantly quotes:

Agar kisi ke dil ko dekhna hai to
uski aankhon main utar ke deko

I strongly believe physicians who read on regular basis make more compassionate physicians.

It reminded me of Nobel prize winner Dr. Abdus Salaam, who hailed from Jhang, a relatively small city of Panjab, Pakistan. When told that Jhang would forever be known for having produced a Nobel Laureate, the always humble Abdus Salaam said: "There will be many Nobel Laureates but only one Heer".

Interesting I just read Dwan article on this nobel laureate Pakstan did not give him due position( as always happens) partly because he was Ahmadi but also other "Pakistani" reasons. He was a highly rated scientist in the rest of the world. Died of Alzheimers (Why Alzheimers) One friend of mine who was a Rhoads Scholar and had invented (Neurosurgeon)a intracranial device called "Ommaya Reservoir (His name was Ayub Khan Ommaya, was genius, Opera singer, Piano-Occardian player would sing Ghazals of Talaat Mahmood etc. and was four year senior to me (classmate of Dr. Israr Ahmed marhoom) He also dies of Alzheimers>He was admirer of Dr. Abdussalam

Scientifically no idea but superficial comment
Spent too much of their brains in their intellectual pursuits
Hahaha I had similar comment about Dilip Kumar who at this advanced age looks completely devoid of all expressions like a (Parkinsonian) as if in his actimg career he has used up all facial expressions
But I have been thinking is there something to explore in these extraoedinary brains and should we look at all of them in their last days of life
