Trying to be a "FICS"

I have a very senior physician - an emeritus professor -  in our hospital who said an interesting thing to us on an annual hospital physicians gala last year.

"Most of the bad medicine and similar problems in life comes from trying to be a FICS which should be said as a FIX - Fit In a Crowd Syndrome. All of our life, we try to find that fine line where we can have a genuine independent existence with integrity or just do things to get fit in surrounding crowd at school, college, work, family, friends and even at a place of worship. We waste unnecessary amount of energy, time, emotions and peace just to get approval and to get fit with the crowd around. We order CT scan, MRIs, and lab tests - despite knowing it would be negative but to make sure nobody see us as an idiot ".

I always wondered: How to see that fine line, every day in my life?
