Laaga Chunari Mein Daag

Jub main residency ker raha tha to Bankok se aik lurka 'Mike' mere saath residency ker raha tha. Aik din main use bata raha tha ke, agar Pakistan main koi ye kahe ke main Bankok ja raha hun to yahi samjha jata ke ye shaks 'prostitution' ka maza lutne Bankok ja raha hai. Us waqt Mike ne mujhe aik baat batai ke - jub koi lurki Bankok main jism ka karobar kerne ke baad apne gaun wapas lautti thi to use bari izzat ki nigah se dekha jata. Wajah ye thi ke log ye 'acknowledge' kerte ke is lurki ne khandan ki gurbat ka sara bojh apne badan pe utha liya !

Sufi kitabon main ye bayan hai ke jub purane zamane main shaher pe koi afat aa jaati aur kisi ki dua qabool na hoti to badshahe-waqt tawaifon se darkhuast kerta ke woh allah se dua maange ke allah mian tawaifon ki dua kabhi nahi talta !! *

*(ye bayan main ne khud urdu ke sufi writer Ashfaq Ahmad se suna hai)

"Laaga Chunri main Daag" , old indian claasic song hai, jise manna dey ne film 'Dil hi to hai' main gaya tha aur jise Sahir ludhianvi ne likha tha. Isi naam ki hindustan main abhi aik film bani hai.

hehe..Ashfaq Ahmed sufi writer hain yeh mujhe nahi maloom tha :p. aur hmmz..I adore his writing and his wives but a lot of the things portrayed are just "khayals" crazy awe-inspiring and even anger inducing ideas but I think they come from him.

Abb yaad nahi hai unmain say kinki short story thi but there was one. Where a "house" is forced to vacate from the centre of the city. Tou woh tawafain ja kar banjar ilaqaya main nayi jaga banati hain...around wHIch a NEW city is born..and the "morality" of society again finds it horrifying that such houses exist in the city centre and decide to have them vacated once again :)

this may sound to be over idealistic but i think women fall into this body selling business mostly because they dont hve confidence n enough skill in hand to cope wid soceity. You see from the childhood a girl child is forced to become aware of her body more than her brain. suppose a a girl has to take up the responsibility of of finances of her family n she doesnt have an skill or a degree n most importantly she doesnt know wot can she do in this world to earn a living, then she is more vulnerable to fall in traps n end up to be a prostitute. i believe along wid degree n education, a girl needs a very good awareness of soceity n the ways of soceity. she must know where can she go in case something goes wrong. she must know that even if she doesnt have a degree she can work for restaurant if she's good wid cooking, she can work in factories if she knows stitching, she can go to place which are operated by women n where there r less chances of harrassment. she must know how to cope wid harassing people around. she must have a good sense of money, wages n everything. our mothers prepare us to cope wid susral all the time, y cant they or our fathers spend a little time to teach us how to behave wid society. susral doesnt have to be bad all the time, but our family teaches us how to deal wid them n how to be patient n all. the same way society doesnt have to be bad all the time but we should be prepared for the worst.

Mystic soul, m sorry if my post seems to be going opposite to ur post but i could resist sharing ma views[:)]

Annonymous - Ashfaq Ahmad was originally a romantic writer but in last 15-20 years he became more sufi writer. He describe himself as journalist of sufism. That story of 'house' was described by Ashfaq Ahmad. I personaly don't agree with everything he said but overall his writing makes a lot of sense.

WIMW - First of all there is no reason to apologize for difference of opinion. Its a very healthy thing. I think, many times women in poor societies are forced in this profession without any choice or as only viable option.

You raise an important point that, mostly parents don't talk to kids about their relationship with future-inlaws or in broader perspective with society - I agree it should be done.

I am not sure but was'nt there a song or something in which the children who were raised by a 'prostitute' adore her for what she did for them.
Kind of 'touchy' thing
But you are right more often the 'girl' who is forced into that 'job' has no other viable options
Teaching skills for the future home-maker are always important. Somebody HAS to run the home chores and look after the interest of the family. Sure a father can help but mothers feel that responsibility better. Allah nay aurat ki tabiat he aisi banai hay (That does not mean she HAS to do it and frankly speaking some men can do homekeeping pretty good)
Anyway that is going away from the topic, sorry.

I agree somehow God has gifted an art of 'homemaking' to woman in her genes.

There is some thing which keeps X and Y genes distinct from conception.

Gawd! I hate such gender specific roles automatically assigned to people because of their sex.

And that 'house' story is Anandi by Ghulam Abbas not Ashfaq Ahmed.

Thanks Sabi for stopping by...

I think God has gifted special genes to woman as she carries child in her womb, breast feed her and take care of her needs. It is so natural for her and no doubt supreme.

There are many stories written in all cultures and literatures across the history on 'whore houses' as they continue to fascinate human minds. Ghulam Abbas' "Annandi" is a masterpiece. I may write soon post on it. Will scan and attach) so other people can also read it (its one of the best piece in urdu). But above story which I wrote was described by Ashfaq Ahmad and its theme is completely different.

BTW: Is musharraf still there?...lol

Taqi: To answer your question, I already put the a little note there that I heard this from Ashfaq Ahmad. As far as I remember, it was somewhere in his talk on his program Zavia - but may be somewhere in his any drama. From where he quoted that I am not sure.

On side note, I found Ashfaq sahab many times making references which are hard to verify like in opening scene of his one famous work "manchale ka soda", (later whole drama based on that concept) he refers to 'Yahya Basri' - which is a very controversial figure in history.
