Taste of Death

 (A text from a friend)

As you know, I am not a very religious person, and as usual I got the news of death of someone on one of my WhatsApp group. Someone commented with the Quranic ayat:

And for few days I kept thinking, why the word "Zaiqa"? Is death sweet or has a specific taste? or does it metaphorically mean that: Death is a good thing for every human?

Don't know my friend. I am crazy. Bewajah baton pe aen waen gor karain..

On Quran

Samiul Aleem

(A few months back, I was in Pakistan. It was an interesting trip. A lot of unusual things happened)

I was simply buying bread at a local bakery in the neighborhood where I was staying. A maulvi Sahab was in conversation with a couple of people around. I heard this intriguing explanation. I am writing in English for ease.

In Quran, Allah always used Samee (listener) before Aleem (knowledgable). It is a lesson for all of us to gain knowledge; it's essential to learn the skill of being a good listener.

Bolne see ziyada sunne ki aadat zaroori hai!

Surah Kahaf, Time-Travel aur Stephen Hawkins

(I may not agree completely, but a pretty strong argument)

"Surah Kahaf ka khulasa ye hai ke agar khuda chahta to insaan ko waqt pe ikhtiyaar de deta

- time-travel ki quwwat ata ker deta.

Magar insaan apne waqt main hi mar jaaye to us ke liye asani hai.

Stephen Hawkins ka bhi yahi kehna tha: Time-travel pe insaan ka akhtiyaar nahi, werna mustaqbil ke insaan hamare paas aa chuke hote"

Samad

Day 53 of Age 39

Somewhere around the third week of July, I admitted a Muslim Bangladeshi man with a drug overdose with the intention of suicide. We were able to save him after a couple of days on the ventilator. Our hospital arranges Muslim chaplains if asked. In any case, we were able to bring a local mosque Imam at the request of his family. He agreed to talk with him. I was in the room when Imam made this statement. I am not sure if I fully agree with this. You can make your judgment.

"Allah the Almighty says in Ayat 53 of Surah 39, named Zumar, that: "Do not take a toll on your nafs (life/soul). Do not lose hope in Allah's blessings. He forgives all sins, and he is Gafoorur-Rahim."

Here is the kick from Imam. I think this ayat is a sign for you, and you know Ayat itself means sign. You did your act on the 53rd day on your age 39, and this ayat is the 53rd ayat of Surah 39. Allah gives you a sign that if you asked for forgiveness of your act, you would be blessed by him.

Go figure!!!

A Death on Christmas

One of my patients died today on Christmas day. He was from Lebanon. He was a hospice patient. At his death, he was reciting this Dua. This is the first time I have heard this. Now, thinking back, it is so deep. This is in context to Jesus Christ in the Quran. I wonder if he recited this because of Christmas or if he would have done it irrespective of it. I guess, though recited by Jesus, it implies to every human.

Indeed, he died peacefully.

"Sense of contribution" and "Shajre-Tayyaba"

Jab insaan jawan hota hai to baRe baRe irade baandh leta hai. Samjhta hai woh saari duniya badal de ga.....Phir halat, waqt aur zarooriat ke saamne jab us ke irade tooTte hain - to aik jhatka lagta hai.

Aur aesa sabhi ke saath hota hai!

Jab main USA ke liye rawana huwa to irada yahi tha - phir Pakistan wapas jaun ga. Patriotism aur nationalism rag rag main doRta tha. Jab residency aur fellowship ke doran 4/5 baar Pakistan ka chakkar lagaya to aqal thikaane aa gai aur aehsaas huwa ke - USA main reh ker shayed logon ke ziyada kaam aa sakta hun. Kai dost Pakistan gaye aur halat/muahshre ki resha-dawanioN main pees ker phir USA aa gaye. Kai rat-jage huwe. Kai doston se bahes hui. Aur phir wahi huwa jo hota hai. Green card aur citizenship ke liye USA main ruk gaye. Khayalat badalte gaye. Patriotism aur nationalism ki chadar khisak gai!

Insaan kamina hai - apne zawiye se saari definitions badal leta hai.

Ye lambi tamheed baandhe ka maqsad ye tha ke - aksar raaton ko aankh khul jaati thi. Apne aap se sawal poochta - ke agar kisi ke kaam na aaye to zindagi kiya hai? - "sense of contribution" nahi to huwe bhi to kiya na huwe bhi to kiya - aadmi kafir tha magar kabhi masjid, dargah, masjid ya kisi church chala gaya to yahi dua maangta ke - "please give me back my sense of contribution".

Jab 2009 main aakhri baar Pakistan gaya to ye aehsaas bohat qawi thi - Dil kisi jawab pe raazi na hota tha - Aik din kahin se aate Karachi ke gandhi garden ke paas Taxi kharab ho gai. Wahin utar gaya to saamne Jumman Shah Bukhari ki dargah pe nazar pari. Be-khayali main andar chala gaya. Hamesah ki tarah wahan bhi wahi dua maangi. Bahir nikla to kisi ne kaha: "Babu ye taaweez khareed lo" . Main ne poocha: "kis cheez ka taweez hai". Bechne wale ne kaha: "sukoon ka"! Jaan chuRane ke liye taweez khareed liya..Taweez kiya tha, kisi Qurani ayat ko puRi main baadh diya tha. Taweez jeb main rakh liya. Ghar aa ke taweez khola to Surah Ibrahim ki Ayat # 23 aur 24 thi.

 - Insaan sachhaii aur nek-niyyati se zindagi guzarta rahe to khud hi jaRain mazboot aur shaakhain aasman tak jaati hain - aur zindagi ka har lamha 'contribution' ka phal deta rehta hai - Sachaii aur nek-niyyati se guzari zindagi se baRh ker koi 'role-model' nahi, aur koi 'contribution' nahi

Us ke baad 'sense of contribution' dhundhe ke liye Pakistan ke chakkar lagane ki zaroorat nahi rahi!

On 'Muslims & Dogs'

(Thanks to uncle for sharing this article with me from Ingrid Mattson)

"...I have long felt badly that many Muslims fear dogs as a result of negative experiences and that they resort to confused religious reasoning to shun them.....Whatever the implications of this report, there is no doubt that the Qur’an is positive about dogs. The Qur’an allows the use of hunting dogs, which is one of the reasons the Maliki school makes a distinction between domestic and wild dogs – since we can eat game that has been in a retriever’s mouth. But most compelling is the Qur’anic description of a dog who kept company with righteous youths escaping religious persecution. The party finds shelter in a cave where God places them in a deep sleep; the Qur’an (18:18) says:

You would have thought them awake, but they were asleep And [God] turned them on their right sides then on their left sides And their dog stretched his forelegs across the threshold

This tender description of the dog guarding the cave makes it clear that the animal is good company for believers...."

Dheeme mizaj ke log

Haji Sahab, 35 saal se America main hain. Aksar mulaqat ho jaati hai. Kam-go hain.

A different view on Lailtul Qadar

This post is in no way to question anyone's belief. This is just another view on Lailtul Qadar (LQ) from a Sufi perspective. This came up quite a few times in discussion with friends.

Lailtul Qadar is not a given night in the month of Ramadhan. Instead, it is a dynamic moment where and when a single soul unites with the universal soul. Whenever that special spiritual moment occurs to a soul, it becomes Lailtul Qadar.

Surah Qadar neither clarifies what was revealed on LQ nor it mentions the month of Ramadhan. But it does speak of universal soul (Ruh) along with angels (malaik) to arrive with the absolute order (kule amar) of All Mighty. When it happens, time becomes relative, as it says: it is better than 1000 nights.

Such experience of spiritual unity has been described by many mystics from all sorts of religions and beliefs and all across the history of humankind. Restricting it to the revelation of the Quran would be a very narrow explanation, as the Quran was revealed over 23 years.

Someone put another interesting perspective. When God says: What you know about LQ (wa ma adraka ma lailtul qadar), we can put forward all kind of explanations and scratch our head, but will never know the actual meaning of it.

Wisdom of Queen Sheba

I was not much aware of Queen Sheba and her fertile Kingdom until I visited Fernbank Museum of Natural History at Atlanta for my daughter's school project. On one of our previous post on movie "Dunkirk", saugoree uncle mentioned her wisdom on war. (His blog post here).

I need to be honest to say that I never paid attention to the depth of the story of Queen Sheba and King Solomon. It has been described in most abrahamic religions. Uncle pointed out an extremely important part of the story with reference to Surah Al-namal (chapter of Ants # 27).

When she was challenged by King Solomon for war - and as her ministers said that we are strong to take them on, She wisely said: "Indeed kings - when they enter a city, they ruin it and render the honored of its people humbled. And thus do they do. But indeed, I will send to them a gift and see with what (reply) the messengers will return. (ayat #34,35)"

It is so true. Every time a king or an aggressor invade a country or a city - they do nothing but loot, plunder and destroy the pride and respect of its culture and people.

(It reminded me of poem of Hasan Abidi Halaku ab jo tum Baghdad aao ge (here).
I did loose english translation of poem Halaku when you will come to Baghdad (here)

Ankabut

From my last post on Surah Feel - uncle's comment reminded me a long forgotten small event of my life. I wrote about Ashok long time ago on this blog. (here). Ashok was from Hyderabad India and in true sense was my first mentor in NY - about learning nitty gritty of american life style. He was one of the sweetest person I ever met. At night, we three paying guests used to share a room. Ashok's bed was at the far corner of the room. Since my first day in that room, I noticed a spider web on the wall above his bed. When I got comfortable with him, one day I asked him that why he don't remove/destroy that spider web from the wall. His response was unique. He said in his pure sweet hyderabadi style (I will just write in our hindi/urdu way):

"Dekho Babu (He used to call me babu)! Makri baRi mehnat se apna jhala banati hai. Woh sochti hai ye usne baRi mazboot, mehfooz aur perfect cheez banayi hai. Aaj bhi scientist spider web se hairan hote hain. Uspe lambe lambe thesis likhe jaate hain - Magar - aik zara sa jhatka usko bigaR deta hai.

Jub main is room main paying guest aaya to ye makRi ka jhala yahan pehle se tha. Main ne rehne diya. Kiun ke har shaam - jab paise kama ke - bistar pe letta hun - aur future ki planning kerta hun - to is 'spider web' se yaad rehta hai - ke main bohat kamzor hun - aur mere abba ki baat yaad rehti hai ke - beta! bara makan, gaari aur america main achha future banane ke chakkar main apni 'values' aur paramparaoN ko kamzor na ker lena. Ye spider web mujhe yad dilata rehta hai ke dekho - america ki zindagi main ulajh ke qaid na ho jaana. Bagair character aur values ke sab kuch bohat kamzor hoga".

It was almost 6 or 7 years later I bumped Quran's 29:41ayat and instantly recalled Ashok's father instructions. I doubt Ashok or his father ever had read that Qurani ayat but I guess all good and divine messages stayed same throughout humanity's course. Kiya Geeta Kiya Quran.

Surah Feel

Another interesting conversation happened while Z was here, was regarding chance, luck and opportunities in life. As we agree on Louis Pasteur saying that: "Luck favors the prepared mind", we pondered on successes of few mediocres of our medical school (like me) and failures of some mind boggling intelligent students. We dissect rather tried to dissect the definition of success etc. Don't be wrong, Z is as agnostic or atheist as I am but from nowhere he asked me:

"Did you ever read or pondered on Surah feel (chapter on elephants) from Quran?"

"Not really". I replied with slightly sarcastic smile on my face (saying seems you are now getting religious as getting old?)

"Suraf feel actually teaches us that man propose God dispose. A bigger effect occurs from simplest things in life like making wrong parking turn, calling a wrong number and so forth. Life is strange in a way that help arrive from not expected, chance appears and opportunity bump from nowhere, best made plan go down to gutter - and at the end human wonder - seriously?  One simple act of  life (call it a cause or ababeel) changes everything in life (call it an effect or makool). There is a reason, one name of divine is musab-babul-asbaab (means creator of causes). Criteria of success or failure is far from the understanding of humans themselves. Work honestly, hope for the best and just enjoy the ride".

Marvel of Surah Baqarah 94-96

Reza Aslan is again in news as he is starting a series of his travelogue of religious exploration on CNN. I tend to agree with him as at the end, it is all about belief that either you lean towards accepting a divine power or not. This let me go back to my own experience and readings of different religions, cultures and societies. I firmly believe that no part of the human existence is left without divine intervention - whether it is a far flung village in Africa or a high mountain of Tibet. Reza wrote a beautiful article as a prologue to his series: "Why I am a Muslim" (here). I am in same boat as he is.

Nothing makes me believe in Islam except Quran, as Umar Bin Khattab famously said after listening Surah Haqqah that it can't be a human made poetry (It is a very poetical surah). I start reading Quran to affirm my atheism and agnosticism, but at many places I had to close book and wonder about it's teaching. Surah Asar had a massive impact on me, though I am still a very confused spiritualist but those two simple lines are core guiding principal for any human life.

My biggest shock came when I reached Surah baqarah ayat 94 to 96. Being a man of science, I always believed that humans will eventually conquer many diseases, and life span of humans will go up to 1000 years, once gene therapy takes off. I saw that prediction right there.

I took some flakes when I wrote post of Pir Shams Multani (here), but in truth human journey is far from over. Many more catalogs of human intellects, war and peace, destruction and resurrections, death and misery, happiness and achievements, many more civilizations alike Romans, exploration of far corners of universe and star wars have yet to be written.

On "The Human Pledge or Ehd-e-alast"

(On my request, uncle expressed his thoughts on Ehd-e-Alast)

There are many pledges/oaths Qur'an talks about like the pledge taken by Bani Israel or the one taken by all the prophets and also the oath taken from the last prophet and we know of some pledges on the earth like the one the Muslims took under that tree outside Makkah (Hudaibiya).

There is one called ehd-e-Azal, as it is described in Qur'an in surah Al-A'raaf (VII) aya # 172. "And (remember) when your Lord brought forth from the children of Adam, from their loins, their seed (or from Adam's loin his offspring) and made them testify as to themselves (saying) 'am I not your Lord?, they said 'Yes we testify', lest you should say on the day of resurrection, 'verily we are not aware of it' " (I have used translation of Dr Muhsen rather than Yusuf Ali or others because he uses the word seed ). Also known in Urdu as "ehd-e-alast" taken from "alast-o-beRabbikum".

It is said that it is not just 'allegorical' description but an actual event that occurred after Allah SWT decided to send Adam AS to the earth. Some Ahadeeth say as soon as he descended on earth (in the Arafaat grounds). Descriptions of hadeethes given in various books of tafseer indicate how everybody understood n his/her own way the "taking out of all the persons to be born up-till the "Qiyamah" (how it happened). Clearly this was as good a miracle as the of birth of Adam AS or that of Amman Hawwa (Eve) and so there is no reason to reject that as a possibility but only accepting it as it is, rather than trying to derive some explanation from hadeeth descriptions. I see that many sahaba say this is how the prophet SAWS told us. Yet, the truth is best known to Allah SWT. The prophet himself could only talk in the terms that Sahaba could understand. We as His creation should just accept it as he wants us to. I do not wish to quote ahadeeth or what I understand from tafseers but just for example I shall give my understanding.

Tafheem-ul-Quran says the whole progeny of Adam AS was created out of Adam's Pusht (Sulb in Arabic) and not just the roohs (meaning rooh plus bodies). Then explanations need where on earth such a large collection of human beings could be placed. Some others say they were extremely small in body like ants (yes I read this in tafseer). Meaning that they did not require a large ground. Ibn-e- Kaseer says- what I understand- they were 'roohs' who were brought out and questioned and then put back (into the "Sulb") and this may seem more plausible than tafheem explanation. But really we dont have to think out in such terms as to how and where it happened.

As physicians/scientists (and this is purely my own idea, not meant for discussion) we may postulate possibility of 'gametes' (the seed) from which whole human body develops could have been miraculously brought out and placed back and of course Allah SWT can give the same understanding and ability to talk/say as the pledge to anything. But as I said before it is much easier to accept this miracle as it says in Qur'an than rely on any hadeeth (Not denying ahadeeth or the authority of it or that of prophet SAWS - Far it be from me to even think about it). If you will recall Allah SWT warned people not to question unnecessary things while Quran is being revealed (S. V, Aya 104 and 105) because it may turn your faith away. That is a very important aya/warning for us to stay away from going into explanations of things that are unnecessary. All we need to do is believe in that Ehd.

You also know some people from Sahaba (Ali RA for example) said they remember that pledge very clearly in their memory. Also that pledge forms the basis of the frequently quoted hadeeth that "every child is born a Muslim but the parents make him/her Christian or Jew or Majoosi" And this I am saying from Tafseer, not just my idea.

May Allah forgive me for my mistakes and misunderstanding and/or mis-interpretations.

Sonya

(Previous 2 posts on Sonya here and here)

Ye 2004 ki baat hai

Meri residency ke baad pehli job thi. Sonya hamaare hospital ke cafeteria ke kitchen main kaam kerti thi. Uski umar 20-22 se ziyada nahi hogi (Allah jaane ab kahan hai). Main bohat arse tak usko hispanic samjhta raha. Main aksar usko hospital ke bahir tight jeans main cigarette peete huwe dekhta. Aik din hospital main kaam kerte huwe mujeh raat ke 11 baj gaye. Main hospital ki cafeteria main pauncha to sonya kitchen band ker ke safaii ker rahi thi. Mujeh dekh ker Urdu main boli: "Doctor sahab! kitchen to close ker diya. Magar aap betho main kuch le ker aati hun."

Sonya mere liye andar se grilled cheese sandwich aur chicken noodle soup le aayi.

Sonya se main ne kaha: "Tum desi ho? Mujeh to spanish lagti ho". Woh samjh gai main ye baat uski jeans ke hawale se keh raha hun.

Usne mujeh bataya ke woh UK main aik Pakistani ghar main paida hui. Usi ke hawale se pehli baar mujeh UK main basne wale PakistanioN ki halate-zaar ka pata laga ke kese bohat saare Pakistani welfare pe aik ghetto - below the line of poverty - zindagi guzar rahe hain. Sonya ne aese hi ghutan ke mahol main aankh kholi. Us ne saara bachpan aik ke baad dusre 'foster homes' main guzara. Na to school theek naseeb hui aur na hi koi college.

Aap doctor zaroor hain magar nafsiyati tor pe bohat insecure hain." - Ye dusra jhatka tha.

Allah pe us ka iman is qadar mustahkam tha us ki annkhon aur chehre pe sirf itminan tha. Use hamari tarah koi jaldi nahi thi.

Is liye yahan masjid nahi jaati thi kiunke log use misfit samjhte the. Woh ghar pe hi namaz parh leti thi. Roz woh koi aesi baat keh jaati ke main sun (numb) ho jaata. Aik din usne kaha: "Mujeh Allah ki talash nahi. Woh to har su basa huwa dikhta hai. Main to uske andar apne aap ko khoj rahi hun"!

Jab main ne Sonya ko bataya ke main kal Chicago choR ke ja raha hun to boli aap 2 ghante baad mujh se mil ker jaayye ga. Woh job se ghar gai - mere liye Suraf falaq ki khubsurat hand embroidery le aayi. Kehne lagi: "aap ka masla zindagi ki 'rat-race' hai - isi ko hasad kehte hain. Yahi shaR hai. Yahi Uqad hai. Yahi Gasaq aur Waqab hai - Khalaq se uth ker falaq ki fiqar rakhaiN, sab theek ho jaaye ga" !

Kamini saare lafzoN ki tafseer aur mere andar ki har bimari ki taabir - aik lafz 'rat-race' se ker gai !!!!

10 baras baad jab main ne naya house khardia to living room main Sonya ki embroidery aawezaaN ker di. Log aate hain, mujh kafir ko dekhte hain, phir deewar pe surah falaq ko dekhte hain - woh kiya samjhaiN har roz yahi surah falaq meri naal kheench ke rakhti hai - Aur - Allah Jaane ye ilm kis falaq se, raat ke kis paher, us ke bandoN ko ataa hota hai - jo na to kisi library main dekha aur na kisi aalim ko kasab huwa.

Sochta hun Muhammad ki Iqra wali baat theek hi hogi !!!!!

Sureh Falaq (Sonya - 2)

Sonya (here) ne aik dafa aik baat kahi thi - jo mujeh aksar yaad aati hai ke

"Sureh falaq sirf us waqt nahi paRi jaati jab haasidoN ka dar ho, bulke jab khud ke dil main kisi ke liye hasad paida ho to bhi ye us aag se bacha leti hai"

Sochta hun - ye Allah ke kese bande hain jin ke diloN main paRa ilm na to kisi tafseer main parha aur na kisi maulvi se suna.
