Aik Hikayat

(Source: not known - received in fwded mail)

A rich Goan landlord once asked his parish priest-- 'Why does everybody call me stingy when everyone knows that when I die I will leave everything I have to this church?'

The priest said; 'There once was a pig and a cow in this village. The pig was unpopular and the cow was loved by all in the village. This puzzled the pig. The pig said to the cow, 'people speak warmly of your good nature and your helpful attitude. They think you are very generous because each day you give them milk, butter and cheese. But what about me? I give them everything I have. I give them the famous Goa sausages, bacon and ham. I also provide ingredients for mouth-watering sorpotel. Yet no one likes me.Why is that?'

The priest continued:' Do you know what the cow answered? 'The Cow said, ' Perhaps it's because I give while I am still living !!!.'

2 Faces of Bollywood

If you are reading this blog, you may know my passion with movies, both Hollywood and Bollywood. Bollywood despite its 90% (or 99%?) masala movies, continue to thrive, survive and make mark on all segments of society due to its continued commitment to artistic movies, irrespective of outcome at box offices!

Recently I watched their new production - Paan Singh Tomar - movie made over 10 years, on real life of Indian National athlete turned dacoit (wikipedia here). This movie is important to watch for 2 reasons. One is for its commitment to off beat/character/art/social/independent cinema. And the second reason is - Irfan Khan himself.

I strongly believe that in today's Bollywood, Irfan Khan is the most versatile and mature actor with his body habitus, voice, command and control over language and dialogues. This movie is so far the best produced on him.

If you appreciate good acting, you must watch Irfan Khan in Paan Singh Tomar!

One dark moment of life!

One darkest moment I experienced in life was when I saw a middle-aged woman standing in the middle of the walkway, asking everyone to f*** her! I don't know. Was she a pro or just mentally unstable? In either case, it was a dark moment!

Zabiha

"Aik to tumhare is Zabiah ke chakkar main, aadmi kisi restaurant main khana nahi kha sakta. Zabiah huwa na hua - are bapa janwar to halal hai na! Kiya faraq parta hai?"

"Allah ka naam parhe jaane se kuch to farq parta hoga!
Apne se bari zaat main fana hone ke is falsafe main, kahiN to koi sadaqat hogi!
Jis gosht pe khuda ka naam parha gaya ho, us se banne wali 'calories' main kuch to parsaii hogi?
Tum Janwar pe Allah ka naam parh ker, ye soch ker rizq ka niwala khao - ke - jese tum meri zaat ka hissa ban gaye - kash main bhi apne rab main baqa pa luN.....is soch se kahiN to koi tabdeeli aati hogi?"

"Pata nahi yaar..meri Physiology ki kitab main aesa kahin nahi likha....Why don't you order salad and let me have medium rare T-Bone Steak"

Aulad ki bimari!

Previous post  reminded me of one conversation happened almost 25 years ago.

"Ye kiya tum kabhi 'shah gazi' ke mazar pe, kabhi kisi aur dargah pe, kabhi mandir main, kabhi imambargah main, kabhi church main, kabhi kisi jamatkhane main - niyaz dilwate rehte ho..... Oe Mere Bhai! Khuda pe bharosa karo....."

"Poochunga tum se - jis din tumhari aulad bimar hogi - ke kese dil katta hai - aur kese insan aas ka aik sahara dhundhta hai"

..And the man whose daughter had brain surgery....

(This is a cross post from Afia Aslam blog with her permission).

My husband's best friend was visiting from the UK this last week and he joined us for lunch one day. This friend has only recently been through a harrowing experience: his two-year old daughter has a rare condition because of which she's been having seizures since birth and her physical development has been slowed down. With every seizure, the chances of brain damage go up and so when no other intervention seemed to be working, her parents opted for brain surgery. It was, as you can imagine, a decision the likes of which no parent should have to take. There are no guarantees in brain surgery. And she is two years old. (Please allow that to sink in for a bit before reading on.) But they did what they had to do and what I'd like to tell you today is the aplomb with which they did it. When I told them that Solom said his first namaz to pray for their daughter, they took the time to thank us and said: 'They just started her surgery. We have left her in Allah's protection.' I remember being taken aback by the strength in that simple declaration of faith. As I told someone later over Twitter, I can't imagine having the courage to let my child go into the operation theatre. I don't think I could actually let either of my sons go, physically, into someone else's arms knowing that someone's about to cut open some part of their body. Even writing it makes me cringe.

And yet, a week ago when this little girl's father was sitting at our dining table, recounting the experience, he was not beating his chest over the horror of it all. He was searching for meaning in what had happened. And he was grateful. "There must be a reason for all this," he said twice. "She was getting the seizures, we didn't know what to do. My transfer to the UK came unexpectedly at that same time, so we could now get good healthcare for her. And think about it, Afia, my daughter was operated on in one of the best hospitals in the world, and I didn't have to pay a penny for it. And she hasn't had a single seizure since the surgery. There must be a reason. Somewhere, there is something I have to do to make up for the way things have worked out for us. I just haven't figured out yet what that thing is."

I very nearly forgot to eat while he was saying this. Because I'll whine and whinge at practically anything you can throw my way and here is this man talking about how he has to repay a cosmic debt because his daughter's been through brain surgery. I was humbled and it gave me some perspective. In the pathetically minor case of Solom not performing at his school parade as I was hoping, I had to remind myself to let go and be grateful that I was lucky enough to even have him, dammit. When looking at the trials others have been through with their children, who the hell cares whether their child says, "I'm a builder" the first, second or third time they're asked? Who cares whether they ought to have been a builder, a pilot or a butcher? Who cares how their school test or interview went? Every other consideration sounds like nonsense when one considers the fragility of this exquisite equilibrium, in which one can carelessly throw around words like 'family', 'children' and 'tomorrow'.

This doesn't mean that I suddenly went from being Mrs. Bates to Mother Theresa. But I spent time with Solom this last week, you know? I read to him more, talked to him more, played with him more. I didn't allow myself to obsess endlessly over his manners, his attire, his speech, his food, his TV time, his posture, his confidence, his performance, his safety, his social life, his feelings... God, the perpetual guilt of having to discipline and then worry about the child's feelings! And so, Solom and I hung out. And we loved being with each other.

Diary!

On my previous post - when Uncle Saugoree left comment about famous Indian actress Madhubala. It reminded me something...."When Madhubala died at tender age of 36, she had only one wish - to bury her diary with her. It is said that it has her sentiments about Dilip Kumar..."...........Ye dil sala bara harami hai

Love!

When Dilip Kumar married Saira Banu, she was only 22 and Dilip was 44 years old. They are stiill together after 45 years. Saira Banu says: "Mujeh is se koi dilchaspi nahi ke aap ko mujh se kitni muhabbat hai! Jo meri muhabbat hai woh hum dono ke liye kafi hai"  (ye bhi muhabbat ka aik khubsurat rang hai)

Loneliness....

(The day when Theodore Roosevelt's wife died, he wrote in his diary that: "The light has gone out of my life.")

Aisha Iqbal was the first blogger I read and since than she remained my favorite blogger, for almost 7 years now!  Another classic post from her...

"................I lived in Peachree Battle until my wife died, he suddenly looked astonished his eyes seeming to no longer see us, she died fifteen years ago. My, has it been that long? How could that much time have passed? He shook his head and paused again before clearing his throat and looking at us, the smile back in his eyes as he told us the benefits of the community and the distance to local shops. We watched him as he walked away. ...................that one flash moment which lasted a scarce few seconds when I looked into his eyes and saw a blinding flash of pain and loss and loneliness and then-- a smile.  It's about the full realization yet again of how many of us live each day with so much pain buried just beneath the surface and how despite soul crushing tragedies we get out of bed, we brush our teeth, we put on a face to greet the world. The ability to love, grieve, and to live in spite of it is the part of our humanity that leaves me most speechless."

Suzanne aur Sureh Naas!

Ye in dino ki baat hai jub main Chicago main tha. Mere hi floor pe aik larki Suzanne raha kerti thi. Uski umar koi 27/28 baras rahi hogi. Meri bhi yahi umar thi. Gore rang ka taqaza tha! is liye meri usse dosti zaroori thi! Suzanne khud ko 'born again christian' kehti thi. Mujeh is baat se koi garaz nahi thi ke woh kiya kehti hai - Mera to sirf aik hi maqsad tha ke: "Ven a mi cama!"

Chicago ki aik barfani raat thi. Suzanne mere apartment main thi. Woh mujh se koi kitab lene aayi thi aur phir hum batain kerne lage. Main ne aahista aahista us se 'intimate' hone ki koshish shuru ki! Suzanne ko mere iradoN ka pata tha aur kai baar woh mujeh dabe lafzon main manah ker chuki thi, magar main bhi iradoN ka pakka tha!

Mera apartment kiya tha bus aik studio tha. Hum bed pe bethe the. Room ki light off thi. Kitchen ki light ki halki si roshni thi. Khirki se khubsurat 'snow' chandni main damak rahi thi. Shayed romanvi mahol ka asar tha ke Suzanne kuch kuch bahekne lagi. Us ne mujh se kaha: "I think, its time to say Sureh Naas!"

Suzanne ki zaban se 'Sureh Naaas' ke alfaz sun ker mujeh jese 'electric shock' laga. Main ne us se poocha: "How you know about Sureh Naas?" Woh zor zor se hasne lagi. Usne mujhe bataya ke jab us ne University of Chicago main research shuru ki to us ka pehla preceptor muslman tha! aur us ne kaha tha ke jab koi tumhe behkaye to Sureh Naas ka ye angrezi tarjumah dil main parh lo.....

Magar main kahaN rukne wala tha. Suzanne ne Sureh Naas ka dil main wird kiya ya nahi magar woh ab poori tarah bahek chuki thi aur woh meri bahoN main mom ho chuki thi.

Magar is se pehle ke main kuch shuru kerne ki koshish kerta, darwaze pe ahat si hui! Meri aik rishte ki khala Chicago main rehti thiN. Amma ki hidayat ke mutabiq unke paas mere apartment ki duplicate key rehti thi ke woh aa ker safaii ker detiN, khana paka jaatiN. Us din woh bagair bataye tapak pari, ya phir shayed main ne knock ka jawab nahi diya to woh andar aa gain. Saath unke bachhe bhi the. Suzanne ko dekh ker unho ne kuch kaha to nahi magar sab surate-haal bhaanp gaye. ......Suzanne chali gai.....

Dusre din Suzanne mujhe elevator main mili to kehne lagi: "I guess Sureh naas perfectly works"! -
Kambakht maari mujh se ziyada muslman nikli!!

On Hunting!

Faiz sahab (Faiz Ahmad Faiz)  se meri zindagi main aik hi baar mulaqat hui. Meri umar bohat choti thi is liye unki ziyada tar batain mere faham se bala'tar thiN - magar unka sunaya huwa aik waqiya yaad reh gaya.....Baat khane se shuru hui. Kisi ne kaha ye shikar kiya huwa gosht hai. Faiz sahab 'sensitive' aadmi the. Shayed har achha aadmi hota hai.  Faiz sahab kehne lage:

"Jawani main insaan ajeeb tarang main hota hai. Hum apne shikari kuttoN ke saath khargosh ka shikar kerne gaye. Hamare kutte 2 khargosh pakar laye. Aik Khargosh ko zibah kiya to pata laga woh hamila (pregnant) hai aur andar 2 bachhe the.....saari zindagi ye aehsase-khauf raha ke 2 bachhoN ki ma ko zibah ker dala..........insan kabhi nahi chahta - magar phir bhi kisi ko dukh pauncha hi deta hai"!

Pata nahi kiun itne barsoN baad ye baat yaad aai to socha likhta chalun....

One strange phone call

I received a very strange phone call from only daughter of one of my very good old friend. She is 21. To give a little perspective - my friend and her family are very conservative in terms of religious practices. But despite my liberal and mostly outrageous views, we get along well.

Daughter has received a 'rishta' from a Muslim boy. 'Larka' is a lawyer and frequently deals with family and criminal cases. Girl's father is refusing rishta on the ground that - he may be carrying a lot of burden of bud-dua from people and eventually it will either corrupt or harm his daughter.

Being an obedient daughter, she doesn't want to go against father's wishes but she likes boy too!

I haven't decided yet what to do!!

Battle of Uhad!

March 19 would always be a black day in Muslim history.

March 19, 625 AD was the day when Battle of Uhud was fought. Muslims were attacked by Meccans. Muslims gained in fight and Meccans start running away leaving behind their maal-o-mataa. Key Muslim fighters at mount Uhud went against Muhammad's order and left their posts to loot the booty! - and no wonder they lost.

We Muslims are corrupt from the days of our infancy. Jo qaum apne saamne khare rasool ka lihaz na ker saki - us se aur kiya umeed ki jaa sakti hai!

Love, InshAllah

It took me a month to finish 25 true stories of Muslim women who spoke about their romantic and sexual side. It was not only an interesting read but an important one. Being a man of Muslim immigrant heritage who is raising a daughter, it was simultaneously heartwarming as well as disturbing to learn about the passion as well as pressure on Muslim women in western society. These stories range from traditional matchmaking at one extreme to graphic detail of a lovemaking act to an other extreme! It talk about rape, coming out of lesbian closet, infatuation, heartbreaks, polygamy and as well as it talk about marriage proposals for Green Card. It also talk about Istikhara, prayers and divine intervention via dreams. It talk about inter-racial marriages, 3 marriages, successful marriage with a man carrying 5 kids from previous, and about gori getting married to a brown boy! Also, it talk about racism against 'blacks' from their own religious community. It describes a girl attached to a Muslim rock band and punks!

Some stories are just cute (can't find better word than this) like of both Ayeshas, Leena, Nura, Nour Gamal and Huda. Zahra Noorbakhsh's take was extremely funny (I got the Hole). Yasmin Khan talk about blog, chat and facebook. Story of going back to first love from Safiyyah is very interesting. Leila Khan story will break your heart as like wait of Chinyere Obimba!

Men in stories will equally leave mark on you like Javed (loved him), Matthew, Marcelo, Mika'l, Mike and Mohamed of Egypt.

Stories are divided into 5 sections. 1) Allah Alim: its about girls meeting their first love 2) Alif: it mostly talk about their first sexual encounter 3) International Habibti: It talks about affair overseas 4) Third Time's the Naseeb: It talked about relationship after 2 previous failed marriages 5) Ayat: Relationship via cyber world.

Bad-Dua!

Allah to phir bhi muaaf ker deta hai. Bara man-chala hai! Jabbar hai to Gaffar bhi hai. Magar, insaan ke peeche kisi ki 'bad-dua' lag jaaye na! - to us ko kahin ka nahi rehne deti. Barbaad ker ke dum leti hai. Is kaale jadoo ka koi toR nahi mere bachhe!"

Kargass Jaati ke Shudar!

I think, Raja Gidh (King Vulture) is the biggest novel ever written in Urdu literature. I had many moments in life where I took this book out and always found it mesmerizing.

One interesting read from it. - "Hum dono kargass jaati ke shudar the..."

On Yusuf!

People think Yusuf has a place in history because he was the most handsome man ever existed on this planet. This is a very shallow approach to that Qasas (story). Lust and seduction of Zuleikha for a handsome man happened millions of time in human history and would continue to do till  estrogen (and testosterone) is flowing!

So what exalted Yusuf in human history? It was not his beauty! Actually it was his strong commitment to his core value of 'not to cheat'. Yusuf was brought from Egypt's Bazaar as a slave but treated like a son by his Master. Master's wife Zuleikha seduced him and offered to sleep with him. Yusuf found it inappropriate to sleep with wife of his father like master. In revenge, Zuleikha was able to put him in prison for long time but Yusuf remained steadfast for what he believed! It was the strength of character. Despite having mind blowing grace to get any woman in a blink - he refused to succumb to seduction, lust and basic fatal instinct.

Alag!

Ye 'Amreeca' se aake sachai ka bhashan dena bohat asan hai.

Kabhi tumhare baap ne Husainabad main 'corn soup' ka thela lagaya ho to tumhe malum ho!
Kabhi tumhari ma ne gharoN main maasi ka kaam kiya ho to tumhe malum ho!
Kabhi tumhara saara saman makan malik ne bahir phikwaya ho aur tumhare khandan ne saari raat khule aasman ke neeche guzari ho to tumhe malum ho!

School jaate huwe kabhi paon main purani bo'seeda ghisi peeti chappal hoti to tumhe pata chalta!

Tum to kal 'emirates' ki flight pakar ke American passport lehrate yahan se rawana ho jao ge - Dil main socho ge ke yahan ke to log hi kamine kaam chor hain - magar '2-D' ki bus main latkte huwe to ghar hame hi aana pare ga...

Apne iPhone se is bad-naseeb shahr ki tasveraiN khenchte raho ke kal facebook pe post kerni hogi - chai ka ye cup piyo - aur khuda ke waste hame hamare halat pe chor do, ke - hamari sachahioN aur hamari khushioN ke aabgeene tum se bohat alag ho chuke hain.....

Sir! We are 2 different species now!! We belong to different nuclei!

Dil!

Ye kese ho sakta hai ke - aap kisi ko bohat yaad karaiN aur woh aap ko yaad na kare? Aesa nahi ho sakta - aesa nahi hona chahiye - aur agar aesa hota hai - to insaani rishte be-maa'ni haiN!
