Peace at Death
I am lucky to be working in a profession where I meet human beings of unusual capacity every day. One of the patients was recently made hospice due to last stage metastatic lung cancer. When the last time I went to see him in the room, his daughter was holding his hand and was crying. He was laughing and trying to joke with his daughter. (He hailed from Lahore-Pakistan, and I did speak to him Urdu).
"Ye ro rahi hai, aap hans rahe hain. Sir! ye kiya majra hai?" (as I tried to lighten the situation).
He replied: "Ajeeb baat hai, maut mujhe aa rahi hai aur ro ye rahi hai. Wese marte huwe insaan ke liye is se ziyada sukoon ki baat aur kiya ho gi - ke aap ki aulad aap ke saath hai, aur aap ke jaane per udas bhi hai!" He smiled and added: "Ji, marta huwa insaan bhi khud garz ho sakta hai"!
All mighty may rest his soul.

No to 'Cancel Cuture'
President Obama beautifully described when he said: “This idea of purity and you’re never compromised and you’re always politically ‘woke’ and all that stuff. You should get over that quickly. The world is messy. There are ambiguities. People who do really good stuff have flaws. People who you are fighting may love their kids. And share certain things with you.”

Obsessed by Rituals
As Iqbal said in Saqi-nama of Bale-Jibril:

3 life dreams
1. I’d like to have a long, healthy and happy life so that when I’ll be 90, I want to go to the pharmacy with my husband (70 years old 😉) and ask for medicine. When the pharmacist will give me the box, I’ll say “you know, I invented this drug!”
2. Before I die. I want to do something unique for humanity, which can be cherished as my legacy.
3. The moment I die, I want only one person at my bedside, a woman I am truly in love with, and holding her hand.
I think it was interesting. Unfortunately, most of these bright kids get crushed by undue hard work, life responsibilities and undue stress of our profession. Sometimes I feel sad about the loss of their innocence.

Azab khatam huwa
Kitab-e-umar* ka ik aur baab khatam huwa
Shabab khatam huwa, ik azab khatam huwa
Hui neejat safar main faraib-e-sehra say
Sarab khatam huwa, izterab khatam huwa
Baras kay khul gaya badal hawaye shab ki tarah
Falak pe barq ka woh paich-o-taab khatam huwa
Jawab-deh na raha main kisi kay aage munir
Woh ik sawal or us ka jawab khatam huwa
One more chapter ends from book of life
Over is youth, and so over its torment
Found salvation from deception of desert
Over is Miraje, and so over is its angst
Cloud opened and rained like breeze at night
Over is the fury of lightning, dark n light
No more answerable to anyone I am Munir
Over is that one query, and so its retort
*Though in his printed kalam, it is written kitabe-umar, I heard him reading it as kitabe-zeest on TV.

"Sense of contribution" and "Shajre-Tayyaba"
Aur aesa sabhi ke saath hota hai!
Jab main USA ke liye rawana huwa to irada yahi tha - phir Pakistan wapas jaun ga. Patriotism aur nationalism rag rag main doRta tha. Jab residency aur fellowship ke doran 4/5 baar Pakistan ka chakkar lagaya to aqal thikaane aa gai aur aehsaas huwa ke - USA main reh ker shayed logon ke ziyada kaam aa sakta hun. Kai dost Pakistan gaye aur halat/muahshre ki resha-dawanioN main pees ker phir USA aa gaye. Kai rat-jage huwe. Kai doston se bahes hui. Aur phir wahi huwa jo hota hai. Green card aur citizenship ke liye USA main ruk gaye. Khayalat badalte gaye. Patriotism aur nationalism ki chadar khisak gai!
Insaan kamina hai - apne zawiye se saari definitions badal leta hai.
Ye lambi tamheed baandhe ka maqsad ye tha ke - aksar raaton ko aankh khul jaati thi. Apne aap se sawal poochta - ke agar kisi ke kaam na aaye to zindagi kiya hai? - "sense of contribution" nahi to huwe bhi to kiya na huwe bhi to kiya - aadmi kafir tha magar kabhi masjid, dargah, masjid ya kisi church chala gaya to yahi dua maangta ke - "please give me back my sense of contribution".
Jab 2009 main aakhri baar Pakistan gaya to ye aehsaas bohat qawi thi - Dil kisi jawab pe raazi na hota tha - Aik din kahin se aate Karachi ke gandhi garden ke paas Taxi kharab ho gai. Wahin utar gaya to saamne Jumman Shah Bukhari ki dargah pe nazar pari. Be-khayali main andar chala gaya. Hamesah ki tarah wahan bhi wahi dua maangi. Bahir nikla to kisi ne kaha: "Babu ye taaweez khareed lo" . Main ne poocha: "kis cheez ka taweez hai". Bechne wale ne kaha: "sukoon ka"! Jaan chuRane ke liye taweez khareed liya..Taweez kiya tha, kisi Qurani ayat ko puRi main baadh diya tha. Taweez jeb main rakh liya. Ghar aa ke taweez khola to Surah Ibrahim ki Ayat # 23 aur 24 thi. Aik dum se jhatka laga. Aehsaas huwa mere sawal ka itna asan sa jawab tha, barson lag gaye!
- Insaan sachhaii aur nek-niyyati se zindagi guzarta rahe to khud hi jaRain mazboot aur shaakhain aasman tak jaati hain - aur zindagi ka har lamha 'contribution' ka phal deta rehta hai - Sachaii aur nek-niyyati se guzari zindagi se baRh ker koi 'role-model' nahi, aur koi 'contribution' nahi
Us ke baad 'sense of contribution' dhundhe ke liye Pakistan ke chakkar lagane ki zaroorat nahi rahi!

Education-2 / Milgram experiment
18 variations of the same experiment had a chilling conclusion that a common person is likely to follow any order given by his 'authority figure' and if they think in their head that authority is morally right and/or has legal power. This includes even if they have to kill other human beings. This was in high contrast to what pre-experiment surveys done in psychology communities.
It explains a lot of atrocities we see around today.

Empty nest (yes again)
This tells us how the human mind tries different rationalizations to cope with grief in life.
"Pehle hum bachhon ki shadiaN kerte the. Beti susral chali jaati thi to us se - dil maar ker - rishta kam rakhte the ke susraal ko apna ghar samjhe. Ab un ko college bhejte hain - aur dil maar ker baar baar text nahi kerte ke - ab woh nai zindagi main set ho jaaye. Bachhe baRe ho jaayain to chale hi jaate hain - bus peeche yaadain reh jaati hain. Zindagi ke atthara baras pal main guzar jaate hain".

Nazeeri's mystic poem
The miracle in my heart says each place is my destination
Nobody takes acts of (only) a crazy man serious
You are not psychotic & neurotic yet and that's your sin
As far as heart is connected to heart, love exits
Garden will blossom till breeze is blowing here
Thanks, my good and evil is not related to you
I still have thousand old enemies who stay with me
Closed tears of my heart will not open without beloved
Though there are one & thousand (many) knot-solvers here
I have buyer of my deeds everywhere
But value of my all acts are not accepted here
Nazeeri! don't raise your humble head from circle of humility
(Does not matter) Whatever route he comes from - is the end here

Immigration, Muhammad, Macca and Medina
Travel is an amazing thing. You meet people and hear things you may not experience in your comfort zone. Last week, I was in England attending a medical workshop. I met an older Pakistani physician who resided and practiced medicine in a relatively small town in the Lake District area for the last 40 years. (He was kind enough to take me after the conference for a 2-day tour of a stunningly beautiful lake-district area).
We discussed the mindset of Pakistani and immigrant diasporas in the UK and the USA. We talked about immigrants' dilemma of staying in a new country and their constant inner desire to move back to their home country. He said something which I have never heard. He said:
"I came to the UK 40 years ago. I am not a very practicing Muslim. I married a Scottish woman. I never pushed my kids to adopt any particular religion. But I never returned to Pakistan and made the UK my home because that's what I learned from the prophet Muhammad's life. Although Muhammad won Mecca, he had all the good reasons and means to return to Mecca. He stayed in Medina - his new home. He treated Medina as his home and created a model state known as riyasate Medina. This is a huge lesson for all immigrants that make your new country your home and deliver all your best to your new home".

Meri Khudkushi aur Chacha Tota
Khubsurat to main itna tha ke log 'Hero' kehte the. Amma abba, bhai bahen - sab muhabbat bhi bohat kerte the. PaRhaii main bhi achha tha. Magar....
Bachpan se dil main Allah jaane kese aik - 'endogenous depression' - ghar kar gaya tha. Udas rehta tha. Bazahir koi wajah nahi thi magar bachpan se jawani main qadam rakha to depression ki shiddat baRhti chali gai. Shayerii aur kitabon main panah dhundhi to depression ki aag aur bharak gai. Mazhab ki taraf ragib hua to woh bhi aik dhakoslaa hi lagne laga. Dil hi dil main roz Allah mian se jhagRa kerne laga.
Aahista aahista - andar hi andar khudkushi ke plan banane laga. Medical school ke first year main final year ki aik laRki ko dil de betha aur chupke chupke aik-tarfah ishq kerne laga. Jab us ki shadi ki khabar aayi to pakka irada ker liya khudkushi ka. Jumme ke Din aakhri namaz parh ke - Karimabad ke pul ke neeche se jo train ki paTRi guzarti hai, us pe jaa ke marne ki niyyat ker li.
Mohalle ki masjid ke bahir har jumme, aik chacha faal niklne ke liye tote ke saath bethte. Hum unhe tote wala chacha kehte. Khudkushi ka plan to bana liya magar andar aik dar bhi tha. Kiya dil main aayi chacha ko kaha faal nikal do. Chacha ne faal nikal ke khud hi paRhi. Unki Aankhon main dar utar aaya. Meri seedhi hateli haath main le ker dekhne lage. Hateli pe qamri ubhar pe bane teekon (Triangle on mount moon) ko dekh ke zor se 'Ya nabi rasulallah' ka naara lagaya. KhaRe huwe, mujhe khaRa kiya. Gale lagaya. Rone lage kehne lage: "Mere bachhe ye zulm na ker. Sach bata, kiya khudkushi ka irada kiya hai?' Main ne jawab diya: "Ji".
Gale laga ker rote rahe. Bole: "Dekh khudkushi kerne wala bara khud garz hota hai. Khud chala jaata hai. Apne piyaroN ko saari zindi ke liye jalti dozakh main daal jaata hai. Apna intiqam un se na le".
Ye baat sun ke amma, abba, bhai, aur behnoN ka chehra aankhon main ghum gaya. Dimagi kaiffiyat thi ya chacha ka koi taaweez. Khud hi ka janaza jaate dekhta hun. Dekhta hun Amma been ker rahi hain, abba ka dil betha jaa raha hai. behnain sogwaar hain. Bhaii himmat haare betha hai.
Bhag ke ghare aaya. Amma ke zaanu main paR ke der tak rota raha. Amma bhi roti rahin.
Samjh aa gaya. Khudkushi aur kuch nahi - apne hi piyaroN pe zulm hai.
Psychiatry main residency ki. Ab yahi nuskha dusroN ko baantta hun - bus zaban angrezi hai

Tom & Delma
Their first date of sorts happened when Tom had to “just move his car.”
“They drove around two, three different blocks or whatever and they came back and they parked and he said he reached over and he grabbed her hand and he said, 'I don't know what made me do it.'
Three weeks later, they were married. Two daughters soon followed, then grandchildren and then great-grandchildren. It was a life filled with love and laughter.
Then, in April of this year, Delma fell ill and did not recover. A few days later, Tom too fell ill. “We got him over to the nursing home with Mama. They had pushed their little beds together and Mama was laying right there, facing him. She was asleep and Daddy goes and he reached over there and he grabbed ahold of her hand and he just laid there with her, and it was so sweet,” Nichols said.
Not long after, Tom died. Delma followed, not even an hour and a half later. Their lives ended the same way their relationship began – holding hands.

On 'Muslims & Dogs'
"...I have long felt badly that many Muslims fear dogs as a result of negative experiences and that they resort to confused religious reasoning to shun them.....Whatever the implications of this report, there is no doubt that the Qur’an is positive about dogs. The Qur’an allows the use of hunting dogs, which is one of the reasons the Maliki school makes a distinction between domestic and wild dogs – since we can eat game that has been in a retriever’s mouth. But most compelling is the Qur’anic description of a dog who kept company with righteous youths escaping religious persecution. The party finds shelter in a cave where God places them in a deep sleep; the Qur’an (18:18) says:
You would have thought them awake, but they were asleep And [God] turned them on their right sides then on their left sides And their dog stretched his forelegs across the threshold
This tender description of the dog guarding the cave makes it clear that the animal is good company for believers...."

Aehsan aur Shar - 3
Lately, I start liking Quora. It is fastly getting a popular website to read unusual queries from life and answers from experts. While reading following Q/A, I recalled our posts from Aehsan and Shar.
Q: How do you feel about all restaurants being required by law to serve all the food to the homeless that they would have otherwise thrown out?
A: Very bad idea. There are several restaurants, bakeries or stores who tried exactly that. Instead of throwing all the food away, give it to the poor and the homeless. It never ended up well. I was witness to one such story. A local bakery started to give away stale bread once per week to poor. First the people were grateful, but after a while they started to consider the free food as obligation of the store. That bread is not a stable supply -- sometimes there is a lot left over, sometimes none at all. But the people expect to get their share all the time; there were scandals, threats and fights when there was not enough for everyone. Queues started to form before closing times scaring away paying customers. Final straw was when the bakery got vandalized by beggars who did not get their share and decided to take it out on the shop because they did not get enough. After the repairs were done, the practice stopped. Owner contacted a local farmer and gave him all the leftovers to feed the pigs - at least they would not ruin his bakery.

Maran-MuRi (Nursing Home ki aik jesi - aik aur kahani)
5 bacche bare kiya.
Bulke bachhon ke bacchon ko bhi bara kiya.
Main plumber tha, meri biwi school teacher.
Pehle paise jama ker ker ke baRe bete ko Amrika bheja.
Phir teen betion ko parhaya likahya aur beeha ker Canada, Qatar aur London bheja.
~ umar guzar gai
Meri umar 80 baras ki aur meri biwi ki umar 75 baras ho gai.
Bimari aur burhape ka choli daman ka saath hai
Mere diabetes ne mujeh bistar se laga diya
Meri biwi ko 3 mahina pehle stroke ho gaya
Wahi huwa jo is perdes main hota hai
Main shahr ke aik kone pe aik nursing home main
- meri biwi shahr ke dusre kone main dusre nursing home main...
Dusre ma-baap ko ab bhi ye mashwara dete huwe zaban laRkhaRa jaati hai ke
- burhape ka koi sahara bacha ke rakhain - Apni maran-muRi ki hifazat karain
kiunke apni hi aulad pe harf aata hai
Wese perdes main aulad bhi majboor hoti hai, un se bhi koi gila nahi
- dekho hum dono mian-biwi ke pass - aakhri waqt kaatne ke liye - ye iPad aur wifi ki service bhi hai.

Religions and Real-Estate
As I was minding my book and my leisure time, I met a person who joined my table. This individual was a professional accountant and an auditor, who specialized in accounting for churches and religious institutions (never heard of it). He said an interesting thing:
"Religions are the biggest real estate mafia in this world."
Now pondering on this statement for the last two days, I have no concrete answer - and tend to agree with it.

A poem - Noorul Huda Shah
Count your steps
(and) walk slowly
Gazed downwards
(to be assured)
You haven't killed anyone
You haven't smashed anyone
Wear shackle of boils in legs
Cautiously
Look behind
(again and again)
Who is chasing you
is judging your steps
(he is) no one else but
the All-Mighty

Social media, echochamber and populism
The psychological attestations from 'likes,' comments resonating similar view, suggestions on whom to follow and background play of profiling and grouping of humans is a dangerous phenomenon. It very quickly throws a human into an unseen cult, turning them blind to the outer world. These dangerous echo-chambers convince a group of humans that other humans are wrong.
These echo-chambers of social media are playing a considerable role in mass-shootings in the USA. Since the last ten days, I have a pleasure of watching Indians and Pakistanis going nuts over each other after new Kashmir events, losing all lines of decencies. Unfortunately, these social media, like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other platforms have put humans blind to humans on another side of the aisle/border.
Nothing concerns me more today than this form of cult-ness culminating into black nationalism and populism creating a digital neo-nazi within each individual. The sad part is that it is making humans to justify war, killings, and harm to other humans in their head.

We meet people for a reason
Log hamari zindagi main aate hain, aur chale jaate hain - jese tum meri zindai main aaye
- magar ab tum ho bhi to kiya, na huwe to bhi kiya
- pehle tum mere liye sab se ziyada zaroori the
- aur ab be-maani ho!
Ab sochti hun - tum meri zindagi main do wajah se aaye
- Aik to mera M.Phil mukammal ho jaaye
- dusre mujeh fajr ki namaz ki adat ho jaaye
Tum se wese hi library main mulaqat ho gai. Tum mujeh mere M.Phil pe mashware dene lage, jo khub kaam aaye. Main jo M.Phil se bilkul dilbardashta ho chali thi, phir aik naye josh se apni paRhaii kerne lagi. Tum jesa 'kathor dil' kabhi nahi deka.
Phir mera M.Phil mukammal ho gaya..
Saari namazain bhale qaza ho jaain magar insaan agar fajr ki namaz paRhna shuru ker de to rab ke bohat jaldi qareeb ho jaata hai - poora din us ke naam ho jaata hai
- Aur phir tum mere liye be-maani hote chale gaye. Ab mere liye tum sirf aik 'existence' ho.
Tum hi ne aik dafa kaha tha na: "Ishqe haqiqi main kamyabi ki bunyadi kaleed ishqe mazaji main nakami ka bunyaadi tajarba hai".
Sach kehte the tum!

Article 15
From the title song (first scene) to end of the movie, the director kept the grip on the movie and never let it fall or stray away. This movie was a classic example of how people in rural areas of any third world country are at the mercy of the police, politician and religious leaders mafia.
Kiya India, kiya Pakistan, Kiya Africa aur kiya shumali amrika
Poor men suffer at the hand of the class system - religious, cultural, social or economical
How courageously director addresses the religious class system in today's nationalist and unfortunately Hindutva India - made me actually surprised! It gives me hope for India. She is such a great country but unfortunately, it's fast turning into a fascist and a nonsecular democracy. Sometimes it makes me sad. I have witnessed religious extremism destroying the whole fabric of Pakistani society and mindset. I say in my heart - not again!

Willful rebirth
I found it very interesting lately browsing articles, writeups, books, and videos - and particularly discussing with a spiritualist, I get connected while in Canada - a concept of willful rebirth!
Some people elevate themselves so high, and synchronous with the universe so well - that after death, they decide - if they want to get birth again, and where, and for what work they desire to help other humans.
While commenting on one of the posts: I recalled a Persian phrase which one of our school teachers used to say all the time: هر انسانی برای یک کار مقدر است
Every human is destined for one work in life. I assume some choose their role willfully!

Brexit, immigrants and my learning point
To my surprise, I met a person who himself immigrated to the UK somewhere around the year 2000, was highly defending Brexit on the pretext that people from eastern Europe are taking over jobs and are changing the good English values. I was taken aback but later did a little read on the internet, I fount that a large number of Asians voted to leave EU.
I learned! We try our best but second or third generation eventually lose their roots.

Aehsan aur shar - 2
I always tell my scientific minded curious son that life is full of paradoxes, and joy is to live through it and try to solve it.
Ye bhi life ka aik ajeeb paradox hai ke: "Jis pe aehsan karo, us ke shar se bacho"
I pondered on this for many years. I think this is due to one or combination of many reasons.
1. Shayed hum jab kisi pe aehsan kerte hain to - nafsiyati tor pe chahte hain ke woh hamara aehsan-mand ho - aur jab ye 'expectation' poori nahi hoti - to choti si baat bhi baRi lagti hai
2. Jab hum kisi pe aehsan kerte hain - to woh 'out of the way' ja ker, 'overboard' ho ke hamare aehsan ka badla chukana chahta hai - aur is gaRbaR main hamara nuqsan ker bethta hai.
3. Hum murawwat main kisi pe aehsan kerte chale jaate hain aur Aehsan lene wale ko aadat ho jaati hai - aur jab hum wahi ya wesa hi aehsan nahi ker paate - to woh bhaRk jaata hai
4. Kuch log hote hi kamine hain - jese kehte hain: Jin ki fitrat main ho dasna dasaa kerte hain
Main ne ye bhi seekha hai ke: aehsan ker ke dur ho jao!
Charity should continue though!!

Bathroom
I am genuinely worried about the wave of populism and intolerance right now at every part of the world, and the world we are leaving for our future generation. The only hope I see is the more tolerant and educated new generation. I have to confess that, the baby boomers and my generation never made from a crying baby into real manhood.
